She Sells Sea Shells

Description

The story of She Sells Sea Shells

She Sells Sea Shells is a deeply personal portrait of motherhood, sacrifice, protection, and the quiet strength it takes to survive.

I painted the original in 2018, during a period when I was raising my children largely on my own. I worked nights as a cocktail waitress to keep a roof over their heads while my oldest son watched the younger ones. I did whatever was necessary to provide for my family — even when it felt like I was giving up time with my children to provide for them.

The curled feminine form became both woman and seashell: soft yet guarded, vulnerable yet strong. Like a shell protecting what is precious inside, she turns inward — not in surrender, but in protection. The luminous curves emerging from the darkness represent the beauty, tenderness, and strength that hardship could not take from her.

The title was born from a tender moment with my daughter, Arabella. Bella was six when she looked at the unfinished painting and asked, “Mommy, what are you painting?”

I answered, “A seashell.”

We jokingly called it The Clam for a while. In the end, it became She Sells Sea Shells — a title with a much deeper meaning:

• She is the mother
• Sells represents sacrifice, and doing whatever it takes to keep her family safe
• Seashells symbolize protection, resilience, and the hidden beauty preserved within hardship

I painted her as part of my Femme Lumineer series, through my signature Lumière Inversée technique — the art of painting light in reverse. Rather than adding highlights at the end, I build the light first and let the shadows emerge around it. Against the deep, dark background, her luminous curves appear to rise from the shadows. That reflects the central truth of this work: even during the darkest chapters, the light was still there.
