The Evolution of Her

Description

The Evolution of Her
2017
Released February 20th 2026

An original contemporary figurative painting exploring transformation, resilience, and feminine strength through Ashley Karno’s technique, Lumière Inversée.

The story

Some transformations take years to reveal themselves. I began this painting in 2017. In 2025, I returned to it as a completely different woman.

The woman I first painted was never erased. She remains beneath the stronger figure who eventually emerged. In the same way, every earlier version of ourselves remains part of the woman we become. In 2025, I changed the shadows and shading around her body and enhanced some of her highlights.

Her body is turned away as she leaves behind what no longer serves her. She is not running. She is choosing herself, and she is moving forward with intention.

I built this acrylic painting by laying the light down first, then letting the shadows follow. As a result, it captures the early language of my signature technique, Lumière Inversée — the art of light in reverse.
